Round 2 Summary

October 15, 2018

See below for our Captain’s summaries of the matches played Saturday.

Panthers First XI defeated by Toorak-Prahran CC

It was an honour to captain club great Daryl Gove to his 500th game, the day started well winning the toss and electing to bat.

Toorak bowlers started well and it was a testament to Will playing sensible aggressive shots that we got off to a terrific start.  Speedy played well as his foil at the other end and eventually was dismissed, Govey came in and we lost nothing getting to 120 from just over 20.  Toorak had a lot of young bowlers and took the pace off, and instead of being patient we were aggressive ultimately causing a collapse.  Wilbur, on the other hand played with patience and intent and hit the balls strategically around all parts of the ground (including a few pull shots) and fell unfairly short of his maiden ton (97).  We set 198 to win, however it was an extremely quick outfield.

Going in with an inexperienced bowling line up we toiled away and eventually lost with 10 balls, the story of our bowling performance was each over had a poor pill that went for 4.

Few highlights however:

  • Doolz showing promise with the new pill
  • Worms calm and steadying influence
  • And Maccas return, will be better for the run

Panthers Second XI defeated by St. Barnabas CC

Great effort by the team to take the fight up to the Barnies and push them all the way until the end with 5 NBCCC Debutants on board!

We opted to bat first and the team got off to a flying start thanks to Brad Judge and Kavan. Hittings 4’s and 6’s at will until Kavan got a little excited and toed a pull shot to mid on. 2/96 at drinks (18 overs) and we looked set to give 200 a real nudge. Minor collapse with Rish and Benny departing in quick succession but with the Pres anchoring the innings and Andy and Col swinging, we made it to 185 off our 35 overs.

In the field, we were introduced to Ismail. With pace rivalling Brett Lee and Shoaib Ahktar, we had 2 backstops, 2 slips, a keeper and a backward point and still couldn’t stop the ball whether it was byes or an edge! Chances were limited however our bowlers kept a tight line with the fieldsman backing them up. At drinks, we had restricted them to 61.
Back half of the innings we were one short in the field but gave it a red hot crack. Junior Miles the man with two quick wickets and customary fist pumps! Joey and Andy kept the lines tight but in the end due to some fantastic batting from the youngsters at Barnies, they were able to pass our score with 1 over remaining. Besides the end result, positive day with all 11 contributing and surely several putting their hands up for promotion next week!

Again congratulations to Daryl Gove on playing game 500!

Even after 500 games, Govey is still trying to work out how the scoreboard works!
