Round 6 Summary

November 12, 2018

First XI defeated Asburton Willows CC

The Ones played out at Ferndale Park v the Ashburton Willows CC team that moved down from LOC1 last year.  I’ll be honest, with going in with 10 players, I was a little worried…

Grades lost the toss and we strolled out to field.  The one question on everyone’s lips, “Why did Haydn Blackman have his pants tucked into his socks?”  The next thing we noticed was he was doing push-ups in the middle of the ground.  A lot of players have superstitions, normally the batsmen, but this is one warm up that Haydn could reuse.  After Brabs (threefa) took the first over from the North end, taking a wicket ball one caught by Bobby at second slip, Haydn then took the second over.  He bowled extremely well, could have had a threefa but alas, two dropped catches.  With this disappointment, and numerous LBW appeals, he was finally given one for his efforts.  The fielding was exceptional, backing the bowling but the day eventually went to Nav, who realised if you pitch it up you’ll take more wickets, finishing with a career best fourfa.  Maaca was exceptional again, too good for the batsmen we’ve come up against, but finally, finally took one off his own bowling.  Grades waddled in after Benny struggled with length and length to push the yips aside, do what he does best and took a wicket; he bowled well.  Grades had miscalculated the overs and we were going to be one short at the South end and unfortunately for Knotty, he wasn’t required as Brabs took wicket number 10, all out 178 – thanks Brabs, go back to Canada.

Bobby and the inform Will (Knives) McKenzie opened the account.  Bobby got a start before falling to a Nav LBW.  Douggy the Pizza delivery boy delivered a hot and ready to go Pizza (Danny Minuzzo), who with Will they put on a 100 run partnership, showing patience, grace and orthodox batting.  Will scored his second fifty (68) for the season before bottom edging through to the keeper.  A simple task for Knotty at four, who just had to rotate and Minuzz do all the scoring, hitting the winning runs and finishing unbeaten 74.

Grades highlighted that even though we only had ten, we never really had a fine leg, and this was a testament to our bowlers who bowled good lines and length and the fine leg wasn’t required.  The last thing we learnt about Haydn Blackman was his choice for afternoon tea, a water and a bag of spinach leaves, maybe the Hulk is becoming Popeye!?

SECOND XI DEFEATED MANNINGHAM CC

We managed to get to 11 players thanks to Tony bringing 3 players (Jesse, Mitch and Gav) and Poppo and Aaron Gove playing.

We lost the toss and we had to bowl first and opened with Junior Miles and Jesse Dunn. They bowled well but the opposition openers were looking good until they were separated by a brilliant runout.

Mitch Potts replaced Junior with the wind and produced a fantastic spell taking 2-6 from 7 overs. Tony Miles, Aaron Gove and Martie each took a wicket and the best bowling figures belonged to Gav Cruse who took 3-20 from 6 overs.

The bowling was solid all day and the fielding was great highlighted by a blinder taken by Blacky at slip off Aaron Gove who bowled with good heat.

A bloke from the opposition claimed to have done a hammy but when we granted them a runner he proceeded to run alongside the runner which created some tension but he was soon dismissed. He then proceeded to bowl a few overs which was a good effort with a torn hammy.

We bowled them out for 116 and began our chase with Boothy and Tony Miles opening. Boothy hit one in the air and was caught for 1 early bring Daryl Gove to the crease. Tony made a solid 19 and then was bowled and given a send off.

Mitch Potts joined Govey and they put on 57 before Govey was dismissed for 45. Blacky 4no joined Mitch 47no to bring us home with 10 overs to spare.

November is a tough month with players away, etc.  If you can play this week or next, please let us know ASAP, we’d love to continue this winning feeling and not have to forfeit!
